The Open Autonomy Safety Case Framework

This paper introduces the Open Autonomy Safety Case Framework (OASCF), a roadmap for the safe and responsible deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Developed over years of collaboration with the autonomous vehicle industry, OASCF provides strategies, argument templates, and guidance to support the development of safety cases for AVs.

The framework addresses the challenges of developing safety cases for AVs, including the complexity of AVs and their operating environments, the novelty of the technology, the need for regulatory compliance, and cybersecurity and ethical considerations. OASCF offers an overarching strategy and development philosophy for complex autonomous systems in the automotive industry, aiming to support safety engineers in developing safety cases that comply with standards like UL 4600, ISO 26262, and ISO 21448.
